Fishing in and around Looe

Looe RiverThe waters off the South East Cornish Coast and the inland lakes and ponds are excellent for fishing. Whether you enjoy coarse fishing, game fishing, crabbing, shark fishing, beach fishing, fishing from the rocks or fishing from a boat, there is something for you near to Looe or off the coast of Looe. Wrasse, conger, flatfish, rays, pollack, mackerel, whiting, dabs and bass are some of the fish that can be found off the Cornish coast.

Sea Angling

SharkThe sea off the Cornish coast is renowned for it's shark fishing and Looe is home to the famous Shark Angling Club of Great Britain. Looe also holds a shark fishing festival each September. In general shark fishing is carried out at least 10 miles out and more often than not over 20 miles out in deep water.

There are many choices for full day or half-day fishing trips from Looe. Wander along the quayside to find your perfect trip. Equipment is usually provided but it would be wise to check first. Other than sharks, catches include cod, mackerel, bream, ling and conger.

Coastal Fishing

Coast towards Looe from the EastGood rock fishing can be found at Rame Head, Gribben Head and Pencarrow Head. Conger, mackerel, wrasse and pollack can be caught from most beaches, in particular Cawsand, Whitsand Bay, Seaton, Downderry and Plaidy.

Inland Fishing

There are a multitude of places to fish in Cornwall, whether you like river fishing, coarse fishing, or game fishing.

Coarse Fishing and Lake Fishing

Lakes near to Looe include the Bake Fishing Lakes near to the Trerulefoot roundabout, which has five lakes for trout and coarse fishing.

The Bush Lakes situated halfway between Notterbridge and Pillaton on the A38 have three coarse fishing lakes.

South West Lakes Trust manages many of the beautiful fishing lakes and ponds in Cornwall.

The 900 acres of Colliford Lake offers traditional fly-fishing for natural brown trout.

Crafthole Reservoir situated near Torpoint is stocked with tench, carp and bream.

Siblyback ReservoirSiblyback Reservoir near to Liskeard has 140 acres of open water stocked with rainbow trout for fly fishing.Boats can be hired

The three lakes of Shillamill Lakes near to Lanreath are stocked with a variety of coarse fish.

River Fishing

There are many rivers to fish from in Cornwall. The rivers near to Looe include the River Lynher, River Fowey, River Inny, River Seaton and the West Looe River. These support good runs of salmon and sea trout, with grayling found occasionally.

Crabbing

Crabbing off Looe QuayStroll along the quayside when the tide is in and it will not be unusual to see childirn crabbing off the quay. The local beaches also provide great entertainment for those who like to search among the rock pools for tiny fish and crabs.
